3D@Home Informal Survey Finds Consumers Getting Good 3DTV Experience
Jul 27, 2010
The 3D @ Home Consortium, a not-for-profit organization led by 40 3D industry leaders, has conducted an informal survey of first time 3DTV buyers. The aim was to assess their buying behavior and their experience in setting up and viewing 3D. While the sample is small and the survey was conducted on an informal basis, the results are quite instructive. Overall, these early purchasers are happy with their 3D experience in the home.
The details of this study, which was conducted by Insight Media, were unveiled at the recent CEA Line show in New York City in June. The results were also made available to 3D @ Home member companies.
3DTVs has only been available for purchase for about 3 months, but understanding consumers early experiences can provide valuable feedback for the industry. The survey ended up interviewing about a dozen 3DTV purchasers, who were all found to be early adopters who carefully researched 3DTVs before purchasing one. Most also bought 3D blue-ray players and used the bundled 3D Blue-ray discs for their first 3D experience in the home.
What the survey found was that these purchasers thought the pricing was fair for their products, that the set up was fairly smooth and that getting 3D image from the Blu-e-ray player was also fairly easy. They were happy with the glasses, but did not find the 2D-to-3D converted content to be particularly compelling. Some also experimented with accessing 3D content from satellite or cable sources, from PCs and streaming sources with varying results.
These preliminary results are encouraging and indicate that bundled solutions from a single company are popular and seem to work well.
3D @ Home will continue to talk to consumers to understand their 3D experiences and report the results to its members. As the market matures, more 3D content becomes available and consumers begin to mix and match components, new issues are bound to arise, and the surveys should help to identify these issues.
